28 December 2010 - Overview of NZ Highland Dancers trip to Wonju Tattoo 2010

On the September 5th 2010, 9 PDANZ dancers travelled to South Korea to join a New Zealand Highland dance team to perform at the Wonju International Tattoo. the Dancers were Jamie-Lee Tuuta, Sam Tait, Conor Hendry, Bridget Karton, Niamh Blackman, Amanda Kirk, Lara Hornby, Anna Reid, Gineke Bell.

Wonju is a city 2 hours out of Seoul and is a hype of Korea Culture. Initially the Wonju Tattoo was formed to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War in 2000, back then with a different title 'World Peace Fanfare 2000', participated by military bands from the countries which shed blood during the Korean War. The first Wonju Tattoo, 'World Peace Fanfare' was held again in 2002, and in 2004, through the establishment of Wonju International Tattoo Incorporated Foundation. The World Peace Fanfare transformed itself into the current 'Wonju Tattoo.'

The NZ Highland Dance Team team had five main performances in sweltering heat (over 30 degrees) at the purpose built stadium to sell out crowds each night and joined a mass of performers from around the world such as Russia, Mexico and USA. The team performed a more traditional piece, which lasted for around 8 minutes. It included Reels, Flings, Jigs and the Sailors Hornpipe. The team was very fortunate enough to have two musicians who provided live bagpipe and fiddle music for all the performances. The team was greatly received by all and even featured on Korean television.

The amazing detail that the Korean organisers put into the Tattoo was phenomenal. In between times, the team was very fortunate enough to experience a lot of the local culture, sights, scenery and was treated to amazing local food at a different resturant for each meal. The team also did day performances for many of the locals.

The team stayed at a picturesque golf resort named Oak Valley Resort and spent their last day relaxing at Everland (Korean Theme Park) which was an amazing way to end the trip.

Thanks to Janie-Lee Tuuta for providing the review above and photos.

28 December - Christchurch Dancing 2011 NZ Championships fundraising - a Christmas Celebration

On Saturday 27th November the combined dancing schools of Julie Hawke, Katherine Kaynes, Danitta Findlay, Cushla Piesse, Adrienne Haberfield and Jamie-Lee Tuuta joined together to put on a spectacular concert called 'Christmas Around the World' at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre. This concert was in aid to raise money for the upcoming New Zealand Highland Dancing Championships that Christchurch is hosting in July next year.

It was a wonderful performance to a sell out crowd, which commenced with Santa in his workshop with his elves, fairies and other helpers putting all the Christmas presents into the sleigh for the adventure they were about to embark on to see dance performances from all over the world. These countries included; Africa, India, America, France and much more.

The final leg of Santa's trip was to Scotland with Santa himself piping on all the Highland Dancers onto the stage for a Massed Highland Fling!

A huge thank you must go to all the wonderful dancers who participated and their dedicated teachers whom without their commitment the concert would not have gone ahead. Also a special thank you to Julie Hawke for her directorship towards this very successful event.

23 September - Highland Piping Society of Canterbury

The Highland Piping Society of Canterbury is due to celebrate its 50th Jubilee this coming Labour Weekend.

This Society is probably the strongest and most successful Piping Society in New Zealand, with affiliations to piping societies throughout the world. It has hosted all New Zealand's top pipers at its recitals and competitions, as well as such Scottish notables as Donald MacLeod, Bob Brown, Donald MacPherson and Donald Morrison.

Various attempts to get a history started date back to 1997, but the challenge has more recently been taken up by two foundation committee members, Alex Thomson and Gordon Ogilvie. The result is a finely produced account of the Society, one of the last to come off the presses of the renowned Caxton Press before being severely damaged by the recent Christchurch Earthquake. It is already being acclaimed by readers both in New Zealand and abroad.
