Fantastic news from Scotland - Richard Hawke has won the Highland Society of London's Gold Medal for Piobaireachd at the Argyllshire Gathering in Oban. Marion Horsburgh came 3rd in the same event. This is a very prestigious event on the Scottish Piping calendar and evidently entitles Richard to an invitation to play at the Glenfiddich event held at Blair Castle later in the year. The Clasp (for former winners of the Oban/Inverness Gold Medals) had a 4th Placing by fellow NZer Greg Wilson.
Also at the same contest (and keeping it in the family!) Jamie Hawke placed 2nd in the Under 23 MacGregor Piobreachd event.
On the dancing boards Shelley Reid was the overall winner, Argylshire Medal, Female Adults 16 & over.

31 July 2007
Note from Shelley Reid who is competing in Scotland around the Highland Games circuit aswell as competing with the Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band.
Greetings from Bonny Scotland, I am having an amazing time here in Scotland, and have only been here 2 days. Yesterday I competed in the British Open Championships (SOHDA) at Airth Highland Games, which is about 20min south east of Stirling. In the morning I had to first qualify, performing a Highland Fling, Sword dance, Sean Truibhas, and Strathspey & Tulloch (1/2 Highland reel and 1/2 Reel o Tulloch). From here they decided who was to go through to the finals, which I was one of. In the afternoon I had to perform alongside the other finalists performing a Fling, Sword and Sean again, infront of all 4 judges. Following a long winded results announcement (they save all the results until last of babies, novice, intermediate, and open) I was announced as the Adult British Open Champion for 2007. Was a very exciting moment. I got 2 lovely trophies and a huge shield, which by the way has New Zealand Dancer Peter Daniel's name on it. Also with the tropies was 250?. It is unfortunate that I cant bring my trophies home but I have taken lots of photos.
The dancers over in Scotland are lovely, and really friendly. Many were interested in my style of Highland Dancing, and I am proud to have won the championship dancing Academy Technique. I had many photos taken with Scottish and Canadian dancers in my Jig outfit, many wanting to get one of their own! Today I travel to Stirling to meet up with the Manawatu Pipeband to start our 2 week preparation for the World Pipeband Championships.
Hope you enjoy the photos.
Shelley

GEELONG HIGHLAND GATHERING
On March 18th 2007, the state of Victoria celebrated the 150th anniversary of the first ever Highland Gathering held in Geelong in 1857. Amongst the events on display were the Victorian Pipe Band Championships, Highland and Scottish Country Dancers, re-enactment groups, woodchop competitions, archery, Scottish animals, cattle, dogs, a Scottish Fair and Market, Strong Man events, Scottish folk musicians, various Clan gatherings and other Scottish activities.
The event was held at the Queens Park in Geelong; the 50th year that the event had been held at this venue.
Victorian Scottish Union Inc invited interested members of the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand to participate in these celebrations. A group of dancers and their supporters were able to accept the invitation. In addition, there were representatives from the Council - Kay Grout, Beckie Rout and Brian North. The dancers that attended were all from Christchurch: Michelle McMaster, Michael Gudgeon, Celia Tanner and Elizabeth Babonnick. These dancers were able to master, within a very short time, the differences between the two techniques. It was especially enjoyable to see them dance the Hopetoun Reel and to execute the steps with dancers from Australia. Glenys Gray, one of our own judges, was requested to judge a few special award centenary dances, which she did with great enthusiasm.
The Games attracted over 1000 competitors, the biggest number participating in the Victorian Pipe Band Championships (24 pipe bands). When they were all gathered together and marched across the Park in both the opening and closing ceremonies, they created an awesome sight and sound. The massed fling only added to the spectacle. Queens Park is a wonderful setting - where the flat field is surrounded by gentle slopes. The locals bewailed the paucity of grass; a result of the continuing drought conditions in the state but this did not detract from the gathering of thousands who came for the day to savour the "Scottish connection". A connection established 150 years ago and the weather stayed fine, making the day very enjoyable and one to remember, complete with a gratifying cooling breeze!
