AUCKLAND HIGHLAND GAMES
On the 18th November 2006 the Auckland Centre of the Piping and Dancing Association was preparing to participate in the Auckland Highland Games by running the dancing competitions.Unfortunately, at 9.00am, the heavens opened and deluge after deluge ensued! The Centre would have been happy to hold the competitions outside if there had been a "Glenfinnan" mist but a move to the wet weather venue was necessary.
The wet weather venue proved to be a spacious school hall with fine acoustics. That the acoustics were excellent was emphasised by an impressive display of piping from five experienced pipers which the audience and the dancers fully appreciated.

With the dancing and piping under way, the judges Natasha Gowan and Grace Smith completed their duties successfully and the following results were achieved:
Photograph of Alexandra Bunting as winner of Event 18, the Highland Fling Open, holding the Peter Daniel Trophy.

While not being able to hold the event outdoors, the day was nevertheless enjoyed by all. The Centre Committee extends thanks to all who assisted with making the day a success and special thanks to the judges and the pipers.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Piping & Dancing member Lorna Coombes on September the 5th aged 22 years. Lorna was diagnosed with leukemia in September last year just prior to the New Zealand Academy Conference in Wellington, and fought a long hard battle with dignity and courage. Her Scottish heritage played a big part in her life and she had a great passion for Highland Dancing which was reflected in her life. The love and respect for Lorna, from within the dancing community, was evident by the large number of people who came from all over New Zealand to say farewell to Lorna and to support her family. Such was the respect and admiration held for Lorna, a Guard of Honour comprising 40 of our dancers from all age groups provided a fitting tribute. Our sincere sympathy goes to Morag, Dougie and Gordon |
