8 December 2011 - Upper Hutt Highland Gathering

The Annual Upper Hutt Highland Gatheirng was held slightly later this year due to the Rugby World Cup and with it came the hope of more consistent weather so the Gathering activities could be held outside. Lucky for the committee the sun slightly shone thru on the mid November day (with wind of course) and the day went ahead in the lovely dell area of Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt (also known to be location for Lord of the Rings scenes).

Many young pipers, drummers and dancers converged to compete in the solo events along with an eclectic mix of other activities throughout the day fincluding Medieval Swordfighting, Pipe Band selections, Clan tents and even Morris Dancers.

The dancing group celebrated 2 birthdays with cake for Christina Cotton and Nicole Harvey.

The rain came just before days end but the dancers completed their day under the protection of the covered stage.

7 December 2011 - Hororata Highland Games

If the 5th of November is any indicator the Inaugural Hororata Highland Games definitely went off with a bang. The gate recorded an amazing 15,000 attendees who enjoyed all the activities associated with a top notch Highland Gathering. The small rural township of Canterbury has definitely made a great Scottish mark on the map. Marketing over a long period by the Christchurch Press brought about large entries in all of the day's programmed events.

Solo Piping and Solo Drumming gained 50 entries, 200 Pipe Band Members, 16 Senior Heavies and 14 Novice Heavies in those field events. The Highland Dancing platform was a very popular activity with both spectators and the local Highland and National Dancing fraternity. Well known North Island Adjudicators Pamela Fleming and Janet Allison judged more than 80 competitors during the day of mixed temperatures and windy periods.

It was a great thrill at the conclusion of the days events and prize presentations to have highland dancer Claudia McNulty awarded the supreme award over all the days events this of course included a winner's kiss from Chieftain for the Day Television personality Simon Dellow.

The Hororata Highland Games have been established as a fund-raising event for the township that was badly affected by the September earthquake and the popularity displayed on the 5th November must surely establish it as an annual event on the Canterbury calendar.

11 March - Christchurch Balmoral Club competitions update

Due to the devastating earthquake on the 22nd February the Canterbury Caledonian Society Hall sustained severe damage and as most will be aware the front part of the hall had to be demolished. The rear part of the Hall remained standing until yesterday when the Society had the opportunity to collect any valuables they could before the rear part of the hall was also demolished. This is not only very sad for Society members but for all Highland Dancers past and present as the Cale Hall is where so many of our Competitions have been held and so many friendships have been made.

Due to the fact that we now have no venue and so many of the Balmoral Club members are busy recovering their own homes and workplaces we have decided to postpone the competition that was to held on the 26th of March. We will make every effort to hold it at a later date but we cannot make any further plans until the Club has had a chance to meet together as a group. For those who have already entered, when the Club meets obviously we will discuss the issue of fees already paid.

To all dancers, keep dancing To all parents, thanks for your continued support

1 March - Canterbury pipers and dancers lend a helping hand for Earthquake cleanup

The Canterbury Caledonian Pipe band have cancelled their recent scheduled practice and have gone out helping residents in the Earthquake Clean up.

The Canterbury Caledonian Hall was virtually destroyed in the recent earthquake last week and has had to be demolished. This hall holds many memories over several generations of pipers and dancers who have learnt their art and competed in that very all. It was great to see the Caledonian members helping out in the clean up instead of having dancing lessons and band practice given that their hall has been demolished.
